Shopping for a Japanese used car will ultimately lead to consideration of the cheap used Starlet as an option. Researching vehicles is time consuming but well worth it when a reliable vehicle is the desired result. Japanese used cars are among the most reliable and lowest cost as well as fuel efficient on the market today.

The Starlet was manufactured from 1973 to 1999 and was sold in the United States from 1981 until 1999. It was originally the Publica40 and started out with 1.0 and 1.3 liter engines as either a two door sedan or wagon. It had rear wheel drive with a four link rear suspension and Macpherson struts for the front.

In late 1973 a four sedan was introduced with standard, deluxe, hi deluxe, ST, and SR options. Then in 1978 the 60 series or KP60 came out and a 1.3 liter 4-cylinder two and four door hatchbacks as well as a 4 door wagon was added to the lineup. In 1980 the grill was updated for the de rigeur with square headlights.
Released for the first time in the United States in 1981 the ‘81-’82 American models 4-KC engine was used and the 4KE the following two years.

Starting in the eighties, electronic fuel injection was used to increase performance and fuel economy to an impressive 38/52, but in 1983 the American version increased the ratings to 42/54 (10 percent) by restyling the front end, fuel injection, and a 4 speed transmission. The new 4 speed improved torque and acceleration in second and third gears.

In 1984 front wheel drive was added and the wagon was discontinued. In 1990 the 80 series on which the Sera and Paseo were based were more rounded. The Sera was not popular and after eight years the Paseo production shut down.

The final series Starlet 90 came in hatchback only with a 16 valve turbocharged engine, a diesel engine was offered as well in 1996. Finally in 1999 the Starlet was discontinued and replaced by Echo which was sold outside the United States as Vitz, Platz, and Yaris.

A cheap used Starlet costs on average 2-10 grand at Japanese used car sales for a ’98-’99 year model and of course these are equipped with the turbocharged engine as well as the low mileage. Most are equipped with AC, PS, PW, ABS and some with double air bags. Others will cost more for things like sunroof, CD players and so on.

Search online for a cheap used Starlet or other Japanese used car simply search those key words “cheap used Starlet” or “Japanese used car”. Usually a search will need to be refined once a target area is reached so for instance searching “Japanese Used Cars” will get to the general area, then “Starlet” for make and model.

The 80 series has rear wheel drive, 1.3 liter engine, electric ignition, 5-speed shift, rack and pinion steering, comfortable seats, good cargo capacity, rear seats fold down, temporary spare tire, steel belted radial tires, power disc brakes, high mileage, and is light weight.

The 90 series added a 16 valve turbocharged engine.

The only way to beat a cheap used Starlet is to find a cheaper used Starlet with the same amenities and in the same year or newer. Doing research is the best way to ensure getting the best price while still getting the best product. Knowledge is power and certainly in this case knowing what is available and what prices are common can be powerful assets on that day when simply choosing which one is the task.
